You may call them Crayfish. Or Crawfish. Whatever you call them, the orange, reddish crawfish from the swamp have made it into more then 30 waterways in Michigan where MSU researchers were able to capture more then 93,000 of them. As they aren't native species to these areas, they are doing harm to some creatures that are native and are being researched for their travel patterns and how to remove them along with other invasive species. Listen Saturday at 9AM as Rick Preuss from Preuss Pets and Lee Cohen discuss the topic with former MSU student and current MSU researcher Aaron Sullivan who is working on the capture and transmitter tagging of the red swamp crawfish that are native to the Southeast United States but seem to be surviving and somewhat thriving in the cold, freshwater environments in Michigan. Aaron discusses the breeding capacity that Crawfish have and the locations that they have been carving out for themselves at the expense of other native creatures including other crawfish species. Learn how to recognize them and even how to handle them without getting pinched. Then Rick Preuss will talk about the miniature crawfish species that make for great pets along with snails and the reasons why you shouldn't release them in nature to get rid of them. What is the difference between a service dog, a therapy dog and an emotional support dog? When should dogs be allowed on planes and in public spaces, and when should they be left at home? Alpacas are famous for their fur, especially in South America, but are becoming more popular in the rest of the world because of their intelligence and personality. If you've never seen one or learned about them, you might want to pay attention this weekend at 9AM as Rick Preuss from Preuss Pets and Lee Cohen learn all about them from Gabrielle Feighner Baker, owner of the Feighner Family Farms in Mid Michigan. The Feighner Farm is home to 30 Alpacas and a Llama and has six more on the way. Learn about how they got involved with Alpacas and what it takes to give them the proper food, training and care they need to thrive for you. Despite the expense, Alpacas are very clean, friendly animals and their fur is used to make very expensive products that are in high demand! There is always a lot going on at the Capital Area Humane Society and this week was no exception. A 12 hour trip to Southern Tennessee to pickup up 35 dogs and puppies was the start of the week for President and CEO Julia Willson. With that task completed, Julia is stopping in the studio to visit with Rick Preuss from Preuss Pets and Lee Cohen to share the details about the dogs and puppies soon to be available for adoption. If you've been in a car collision with a good size deer or have had your garden picked clean of the plants you carefully planted by a deer, you might agree with the city officials from East Lansing that culling the herd in the area is necessary. If you were one of 8 wildlife rehabilitators in the state, nursing fawns back to health at great effort and expense only to have them released in the wild a few hundred feet from where the culling is scheduled to take place, you might not agree with the East Lansing officials. Did you know that the founder of Kellogg Cereal donated 3700 acres of land to Michigan State University in 1927 in Augusta, MI which is known as the W.K. Kellogg Biological Station? It is MSU's largest off-site campus and one of North America's premier inland field stations. When you think of the State of Michigan DNR, you need to consider beyond the park ranger who enforces the rules or the people who collect the money. DNR is very involved in educating the public in classrooms as well as on YouTube thanks to Covid. Listen Saturday at 9AM as Rick Preuss from Preuss Pets and Lee Cohen discuss the Salmon in the Classroom and other educational programs with Tracy Page, Aquatic Education coordinator for the Sate of Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Learn all about the success and growth of the Salmon in the Classroom program and how much knowledge and work is required of school kids and their teachers to participate in the program. Tracy also will discuss the other educational videos that have been created the last two years and are now available on YouTube and other sites for parents to use in helping educate their children about the beauty and fascination of the natural world. Finally, Tracy elaborates on other programs coming up and the methods by which they are funded through public use like state park fees, fishing licenses, etc. instead of relying on state taxes. When hurricane Ida struck in New Orleans this summer, the impact was deadly for people and animals alike. But racing to help was Heidi Williams, Director of Ingham County Animal Control and Deputy Dan Verhougstraete. They packaged up a truck with supplies and jumped into action!
