Democrats Sweep Key Michigan Races, Flip State House in Midterm Election

Categories: Local News

Michigan Democrats scored major victories in Tuesday's midterm elections, winning several high-profile statewide races, flipping control of the Michigan House and expanding their majority in the state Senate.

Abdul El-Sayed defeated Republican Mike Rogers in the race for the U.S. Senate, becoming Michigan's first Muslim U.S. senator. Democrats also secured control of Congress nationally, marking a significant shift in the political landscape.

In Michigan's 7th Congressional District, challenger William Lawrence declared victory early Wednesday morning over incumbent Republican Tom Barrett.

Democrats also swept the state's top executive offices. Jocelyn Benson defeated Republican John James in the gubernatorial race, while Eli Savit defeated Doug Lloyd to win the attorney general's race. Garlin Gilchrist also prevailed over Anthony Forlini in the secretary of state's race.

The Democratic victories extended to the state Legislature, where the party flipped control of the Michigan House while increasing its majority in the Michigan Senate.

Michigan Voters Decide Two Statewide Proposals

Voters also weighed in on two statewide ballot proposals.

Proposal 1, which would have addressed the possibility of holding a constitutional convention, was overwhelmingly rejected.

Proposal 2, designed to limit utility companies' influence and spending in politics, passed by an even wider margin.

Local Election Results

In the Michigan State University Board of Trustees race, incumbents Brianna Scott and Kelly Tebay Zemke were the top two vote-getters in the city of Lansing.

Lansing voters also approved a millage renewal that will provide funding for police, fire services and roads.

Meanwhile, voters in Mason elected five City Council candidates supported by the group No Data Centers in Mason. Three of the five successful candidates are former mayors.

The results mark a consequential election for Michigan, with Democrats making significant gains at both the state and national levels while voters also weighing in on local funding and development issues.
