A jury has found 60-year-old Jacobo Montalvo of Lansing guilty of murder and unlawful imprisonment in connection with the 2023 abduction and killing of 29-year-old Alicia Gallegos.

According to the case, Gallegos was kidnapped in downtown Lansing before she was killed. Her body was later discovered along a rural road in White Oak Township.

Montalvo faces a sentence of life in prison without parole. His sentencing is scheduled for late October.

Police Identify Man Killed in Lansing Crash

Lansing police have identified the man killed in a two-vehicle crash on Grand River Avenue Sunday.

Police say 25-year-old Rain Norris died in the crash near Raymond Drive on Lansing’s north side. Investigators believe speed may have been a factor in the collision. The investigation remains ongoing.

35 Arrested During MSU Welcome Week

East Lansing police reported 35 arrests during the weekend surrounding Michigan State University’s Welcome Week festivities.

Thousands of students returned to campus and downtown East Lansing, leading to large crowds around area bars and along city streets. Police increased their presence with additional patrols, drones and assistance from a Michigan State Police helicopter.

From Friday, Aug. 28, through Sunday, Aug. 30, authorities reported 35 arrests, 134 citations and 348 calls for service.

Man Killed by Amtrak Train in Jackson County

A 35-year-old man was struck and killed by an Amtrak train near the Jackson County Airport Monday night.

The Blackman-Leoni Department of Public Safety said the man was struck by the train before his body was discovered on the tracks along Wildwood Avenue early Tuesday morning.

Authorities say they do not suspect foul play.

Hillsdale County Sheriff Facing Felony Charges

Hillsdale County Sheriff Scott Hodshire is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday on felony charges.

Court records show the 59-year-old sheriff is charged with obstruction of justice and misconduct in office. The allegations involve the disclosure of confidential information from an ongoing investigation to a suspect and/or the suspect’s family.

Neither the sheriff’s office nor the Michigan Attorney General’s Office has commented on the case, according to the newscast.

New Poll Shows Democrats Leading Michigan Races

A new survey from Michigan State University’s Institute for Public Policy and Social Research shows Democratic candidates leading in the races for Michigan governor and U.S. Senate.

Among likely voters, Jocelyn Benson leads John James by nine percentage points in the gubernatorial race. In the Senate contest, Abdul El-Sayed leads Mike Rogers by five points.

The survey is reported to have a four-point margin of error.

Supreme Court Sets Deadline in Michigan Ballot Proposal Case

The U.S. Supreme Court has given Michigan election officials until noon Wednesday to respond to an emergency request involving a proposed ballot initiative that would require citizenship verification for voters.

Americans for Citizen Voting filed the lawsuit last week after the Michigan Board of State Canvassers deadlocked in a 2-2 vote following a dispute involving individual petition signatures.

New University of Michigan President to Earn $2 Million Annually

The University of Michigan Board of Regents approved a new contract Tuesday for incoming university president Cybele Raver during a special meeting.

Under the five-year contract, Raver is set to earn $2 million annually. Her term as president is scheduled to begin Dec. 1.

The contract comes as the university prepares for a change in leadership later this year.
