A Minnesota developer is suing the City of East Lansing after the City Council rejected plans for a proposed $90 million, 10-story mixed-use development that would have included housing for Michigan State University students.

Developer Cody Dietrich is asking a judge to reverse the council's decision. Council members had raised concerns about a lack of parking. Dietrich argues that the project did not require site plan approval.

Meanwhile, Michigan State University is welcoming students back to campus. Thursday is the final move-in day for returning students ahead of the start of the fall semester Monday. The move-in period is part of Welcome Week, which included a new student kickoff Wednesday night at the Breslin Center.

Thursday's MSU activities include Spartan Quest, the Campus Open House and the Sparty Gras Fall Fest.

67 Animals Found at DeWitt Township Home

Authorities discovered 67 animals at a home on King Arthur's Court in DeWitt Township. Thirty-six animals were found alive and 31 were dead.

The live animals included cats, dogs, a duck, rabbit, frog, bearded dragon lizard, rats and hamsters. Among the dead animals were five ferrets, nine rats, one gecko, four ducks and 12 guinea pigs.

An arrest was made and charges were filed, although the charges were not related to animal abuse. The home appears to have been condemned.

Michigan to Receive $171 Million From Meta Settlement

Michigan is set to receive $171 million as part of a landmark $17.1 billion settlement involving Meta and 47 states.

The states accused the company behind Facebook and Instagram of designing its social media platforms to be addictive to children. As part of the settlement, Meta has agreed to make changes involving how young people use its platforms.

Michigan Joins Postal Service Lawsuit

Michigan is also participating in another multi-state lawsuit, this time challenging a new U.S. Postal Service regulation involving mail-in voting.

Twenty-five states are suing over a rule requiring states to enroll every voter eligible to vote by mail into a list and create a list of registered voters for each state. The coalition argues the regulation could put voters at risk of disenfranchisement.

Protesters Oppose Line 5 Project

Protesters gathered at the Michigan Capitol Wednesday to oppose the Enbridge Line 5 pipeline project beneath the Straits of Mackinac, citing environmental concerns.

Enbridge has received a necessary federal permit for the project, although construction has been blocked by the Michigan Supreme Court.

U.S. Senate Debate Set for October

At least one U.S. Senate debate is scheduled between Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed and Republican candidate Mike Rogers.

The debate is set for October 8 and will be hosted by WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids, with Rick Albin serving as moderator.

Partial Lunar Eclipse Expected

Weather permitting, Michigan residents may have an opportunity Thursday night to see a partial lunar eclipse, according to NOAA.

The Northern Lights are also projected to be visible in Michigan between 9:23 p.m. and 3:01 a.m., with maximum totality expected shortly after midnight.
