Students across mid-Michigan are returning to classrooms Wednesday as the new school year gets underway.  Lansing Public Schools, along with the Okemos, Mason, Haslett and Fowler school districts, are welcoming students back following summer break.

MSU Student Move-In Continues  

At Michigan State University, thousands of students are also moving into campus residence halls as Welcome Week continues.

Wednesday marks the second day of move-in for freshmen and transfer students at MSU. Returning students are scheduled to move in Wednesday and Thursday, with the new student kickoff planned for Wednesday night at the Breslin Center.

Flint Water Crisis Report Renews Calls for Justice,

Meanwhile, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is drawing renewed attention to the Flint water crisis following the release of a report detailing more than a decade of investigation.

Speaking at a news conference Tuesday, Nessel said civil settlements totaling hundreds of millions of dollars continue to be distributed to people affected by the crisis. She criticized the lack of criminal prosecutions, saying those responsible have not faced a criminal trial.

Nessel said the lack of criminal proceedings means evidence will not be presented in court and defendants will not face a jury over actions that contributed to deaths and the poisoning of thousands of people.

Corporate Political Spending Issue Heads to the Ballot 

In the Michigan Legislature, the House approved a bill Tuesday backed by the group Money Out of Politics that would prohibit corporate political spending. The Senate did not adopt the measure, sending the issue to voters in November.

The proposal would prohibit regulated utilities and companies holding state contracts worth more than $250,000 from making political contributions.

More Testimony in High-Profile Murder Case

In Lenawee County, a preliminary hearing continues Wednesday for John Skelton, who is charged with killing his three young sons in 2010. The boys' bodies have never been found.

A friend of Skelton testified Tuesday that Skelton had told him about an underground organization about a month before the boys were last seen. Wednesday is the third day of the preliminary hearing.

Michigan Remembers Dolly Parton

Across Michigan, flags have been lowered to half-staff in honor of country music icon Dolly Parton, who died at age 80. President Trump called for flags nationwide to be lowered beginning Tuesday evening. The flags are scheduled to return to full-staff September 1.
