The Lansing City Council is set to consider a resolution calling on police to end the use of Flock cameras by terminating the city's contracts and agreements with the company.

The Flock system uses automatic license plate readers, which have become the focus of an organized opposition effort known as DeFlock Lansing. Supporters of the effort gathered for a rally Sunday night as debate continues over the cameras and their use by law enforcement.

Mid-Michigan Schools Begin New Year

Several major school districts across mid-Michigan are welcoming students back to class Monday.

Among the districts beginning the new school year are East Lansing Public Schools, Waverly, Eaton Rapids, DeWitt, Maple Valley and Potterville, along with Lansing Catholic High School and Lansing Christian School.

Michigan State University is also preparing for the arrival of new students. MSU's fall welcome events begin this week, with the new student kickoff scheduled for Wednesday night. Additional welcome activities and celebrations will continue through Saturday.

Lansing-Area Gas Prices Fall

Drivers in the Lansing area are seeing some relief at the pump. The average price for a gallon of gasoline in the Lansing area was $4.10 as of Sunday, according to AAA Michigan. That's down 21 cents from a week earlier.

The statewide average stood at $4.16 per gallon, nearly 10 cents lower than the previous week.

Former Sheriff's Officer Faces Criminal Sexual Conduct Charges

A former sheriff's officer is behind bars facing criminal sexual conduct charges.

According to the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office, the case against Tyler Glenn Strawser stems from an investigation that began in 2023 after multiple disclosures involving Strawser dating back to 2017, before his employment with the department.

Strawser is being held on a $250,000 bond. A probable cause conference is scheduled for August 28, followed by a preliminary examination on September 10.

Michigan Republicans Ratify 2026 Candidates

Michigan Republicans formally confirmed several candidates during Saturday's nominating convention in Mount Pleasant.

Eaton County Prosecutor Doug Lloyd was confirmed as the party's candidate for attorney general, while Macomb County Clerk Anthony Forlini was selected as the GOP candidate for secretary of state.

Republicans also ratified John James as their gubernatorial nominee, with Jay DeBoyer as his running mate, ahead of the November election.

Lansing YMCA Gala Raises More Than $800,000

The Lansing YMCA raised more than $800,000 during the Legacy of Magic Gala over the weekend.

The event celebrated NBA legend Earvin "Magic" Johnson and his family for their efforts to empower young people in the area.

The funds will support YMCA scholarships and facility upgrades.

Ads Coming to Michigan Stadium

University of Michigan Athletics is bringing advertising to the Big House for the first time.

The university is partnering with the Leaders and Best Champions Partners program to introduce advertisements at Michigan Stadium. The ads will be displayed along the outer edges of the end-zone video board and on blue pads covering the brick behind each end zone.

The move marks the first time advertisements will be displayed inside Michigan Stadium.
