Lansing-Area Schools Begin New School Year; Gas Prices Rise

Local school districts across the Lansing Tri-County area are beginning final preparations for the new school year, with several districts welcoming students back to class Monday.

Students in the Dansville, Webberville, Charlotte and Bellevue school districts returned to school Monday. Ovid-Elsie schools are scheduled to open Tuesday, followed Wednesday by Holt, Leslie, Stockbridge, Williamston, Bath and Olivet schools.

Meanwhile, East Lansing police are asking for the public’s help as they investigate an aggravated assault reported downtown earlier this month.

Police say the incident occurred during the early morning hours of August 9 in the 500 and 600 blocks of Albert Avenue. Multiple people were reportedly involved in the assault.

Gas prices are also starting the new week higher across Michigan.

AAA Michigan reports the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in the Lansing area is $4.32, an increase of 19 cents from a week earlier. The statewide average is $4.27 per gallon, up 13 cents over the same period.

In a separate case involving Michigan State University, a judge has found the man accused of operating a methamphetamine lab inside Wells Hall incompetent to stand trial.

Xin Tong, 31, appeared in court Friday and was referred back to psychiatric treatment after the court determined he was unable to assist in his own defense. The case will not proceed until Tong is restored to competency.

Tong is scheduled to return to court November 13 for a review.

Michigan State Police are continuing their investigation into the shooting deaths of six people at a home near Cadillac in Missaukee County last Friday.

The six people killed, including the suspect, ranged in age from 16 to 53. A 13-year-old girl who was seriously injured in the incident was reported to be in stable condition at last check.

Closer to home, the 80th annual DeWitt Ox Roast has wrapped up after a weekend of festivities. The event concluded Sunday following a weekend featuring live music, fireworks and the return of the traditional Ox Roast sandwiches served to attendees.
