Lansing Police Investigating Deadly Shootings; Mason Recall Effort Gains Momentum

Police in Lansing are expected to release additional information Wednesday following a series of shootings that unfolded earlier this week, including one that left a teenager dead.

Authorities identified 15-year-old Deron James as the victim killed early Monday morning near St. Joseph Park on Hillsdale Street. Police said a 20-year-old woman was also shot during the incident and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

In a separate shooting reported early Monday, a 22-year-old man was shot in the shoulder on Moores River Drive, across the river from Hillsdale Street. Investigators have not yet said whether the shootings are connected.

Meanwhile, residents in Mason could soon decide whether to recall two city leaders. The Ingham County Clerk’s Office has received petitions seeking the recall of Mayor Russell Whipple and City Council Member Elaine Ferris. The effort follows backlash over a proposed zoning ordinance involving data centers that was later repealed. Petition organizers must gather at least 1,000 valid signatures for the recall effort to move forward.

As another day of extreme heat impacts the Lansing area, state officials are urging outdoor workers to take precautions against heat-related illness. MIOSHA Senior Industrial Hygienist Jamie Green said workers and employers should watch for symptoms including headaches, dizziness, weakness, nausea, heavy sweating, confusion, and collapse.

MIOSHA recommends workers stay hydrated, rest frequently, and cool down when symptoms appear. Officials also advise calling 911 during medical emergencies involving heat stroke or severe heat illness.

At the state Capitol, lawmakers are returning to session in hopes of finalizing Michigan’s 2027 fiscal year budget before a self-imposed midnight deadline. The negotiations come after public school districts were required to pass their own budgets amid ongoing uncertainty surrounding the state school aid budget.

In Washington, President Donald Trump approved more than $32 million in federal disaster relief funding for Michigan following severe storms that impacted dozens of counties in April. Trump announced the approval on Truth Social, saying Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed gratitude for the assistance.

In sports-related legal news, former Detroit Lions cornerback Terrion Arnold has been released from jail after posting a $1 million bond. Arnold faces charges including kidnapping, armed robbery, and conspiracy tied to an incident in Tampa, Florida, earlier this year. The Lions released Arnold shortly after Monday’s bond hearing.
